History of Kappa Alpha Psi in Indianapolis

The Original Gamma Chapter

The Gamma Chapter was originally chartered in Indianapolis and composed entirely of alumni members.  From the available information, it was the first organized group of alumni associated with any so-called black undergraduate Greek-letter college fraternity.

Although these men possessed some interest in the Fraternity, they had no close ties and were too far removed from the college scene to insure continuing life to the Chapter.  The Chapter, therefore, was not active, and after a brief period, its recognition was withdrawn.

Indianapolis Alumni Chapter

The Indianapolis Alumni Chapter, as it is known today, was formed on October 15, 1920, by six charter members:  Fraternity Founders Elder Watson Diggs, Guy L. Grant and Ezra D. Alexander; Irven Armstrong (the second Grand Polemarch), Lionel F. Artis (Editor-in-Chief of the Kappa Alpha Psi Journal), and Sirdastian Merriwether.  It is small wonder that under the leadership of Grant, the chapter's first Polemarch, and the watchful eyes of Founders, a Past Grand Polemarch and dedicated members of the "old school", Indianapolis Alumni became one of the Fraternity's truly great chapters.

Indianapolis Alumni Chapter in its early years developed the spirit of fraternity by traveling to places where new chapters were chartered and assisting in introducing the chapter and fraternity to the community where they were located.

Since the chapter's chartering, its members have been well represented in the professional, civic and cultural activities of the city and surrounding communities.  The chapter continues to follow the purpose of the Fraternity through its achievements and service in every effort of human endeavor.
