Indianapolis - As superintendent for Indianapolis Public Schools, Dr. Eugene G. White is normally encouraging students to go for the honor roll. But now he's made the honor roll himself, of sorts.

Dr. White has been chosen as the 2009 District V Superintendent of the Year.  Members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (IAPSS) made the pick.

Winners are chosen by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues. One of the eight district winners will represent Indiana in the American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year program.

According to a press release, it's White's second time to be recognized with the honor, an "extremely rare event" in the association's 22-year history of this program. White was selected in 2002 as District V winner and Indiana's Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. White has been IPS superintendent since 2005. Before that, he was superintendent for Washington Township Schools and a deputy superintendent for IPS.

In his book Leadership Beyond Excuses: The Courage to Hold the Rope, White notes: "A leader should know that beliefs without passion are simply ideas. Passion without beliefs is simply frustration. Beliefs are the foundation of who we are. They are the batteries that start our efforts...To truly fuel the energy for leadership requires passion from the leader."
