Members of the legendary 1955 Crispus Attucks High School basketball team and friends got together Saturday at Hollyhock Hill restaurant to recognize one of their own.
About 20 people, including several players who made history as part of the first all-black team in the country to win a state basketball championship, gathered in honor of assistant coach Al Spurlock, 96.
There was a basketball for the team to autograph, as well as a book about Crispus Attucks.
"It was a big surprise," said Spurlock, who sat near Betty Crowe, legendary coach Ray Crowe's widow. "I appreciate it very much that they still remember some of their old coaches and teachers."
Former NBA star Oscar Robertson, who helped the 1955 Attucks team win its championship, showed up, too.
Spurlock taught life lessons, as well as those on the basketball court, said Robertson, who lives in Cincinnati.
