A Brief History of Kappa League
Minimize

Under the leadership of Mel Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter designed a program in 1969 to help young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor.  The program provided both challenging and rewarding experiences which richly enhanced their lives.  Membership was open to male students of the tenth through the twelfth grades.  The Fraternity sought to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become their responsibilities.

Kappa League in Indianapolis

In the winter of 1995, Bros. Marvin Bardo and Jimmy Meadows, Jr. discussed the absence of a high school Kappa League from Indianapolis Alumni.  Discussions with Polemarch Stant Clark and Guide Right Chairman David DeFrantz revealed that the Fall Creek YMCA program was not defunct and recent efforts to establish programs in specific high schools failed due to a lack of follow-up.  Learning this, Bros. Bardo and Meadows took it upon themselves to start a Kappa League program in Indianapolis high schools.

Brother Meadows took on the task of recruiting - both members and advisors.  At the same time, Brother Bardo took on the difficult task of obtaining funds for this program.  In March 1996, Brother Bardo received a grant form Indiana Black Expo and Eli Lilly Corporation in the amount of $1,875.00.  By April, Brother Meadows, with the assistance of Brother Kevin King, had assembled a group of brothers to serve as advisors.  On May 1, 1996, the first Kappa League interest meeting was held at Warren Central High School.  This school was selected becuase Brother Meadows was an instructor at the school and this would provide help in tracking the progress of the program and its participants.

In June 1996, the first class of Kappa Leaguers were inducted at Warren Central High School.  The new members were eager to participate in any endeavor that would positively impact themselves, their school, community or the Kappa League.  IN late October 1996, the second group of Kappa Leaguers were inducted at Warren.  And, in December 1996, the first group of Kappa Leaguers at Southport High School were inducted with Brother Hollis Thomas as the in-school advisor.  The hopes of Bros. Bardo, Meadows and King were to see the Indianapolis Alumni Kappa League program expand to all city schools.

Since 1995, the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter Kappa League has been an active force in the community.  During that time, the chapter's program has continued to flourish and expand.  Currently, the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter serves over 200 youth at six area high schools

  • Arlington High School
  • Charles A. Tindley Charter School
  • Broad Ripple High School
  • North Central High School
  • Pike High School
  • Warren Central High School
